CONTRIVE, v.t.

1. To invent; to devise; to plan.

Our poet has always some beautiful design, which he first establishes, and then contrives the means which will naturally conduct him to his end.

2. To wear out.

[This must be from the L. Contero, contrivi, and if the French controuver, and Italian controvare, are the same word differently applied, the primary sense is, to invent by rubbing, that is, by ruminating; or to strike out, as in forge. But the word is probably from trouver, to find.]

CONTRIVE, v.i. To form or design; to plan; to scheme.

How shall we contrive to hide our shame? [This verb is really transitive, but followed by a verb, in the place of an object or name.]

Sketches for commissioned Noah Webster Art

The sketches to Re-capture the Spirit of Noah Webster are finished. Thanks to Dave McClellan for all of his hard work. These sketches are a starting point for a discussion. The current poll gives you a chance to vote on a particular sketch. Elements can each sketch can be implemented into a final composition. The final composition will be digital composition in full color. Please participate with us as we proceed with this process. We are in the process of learning from the Noah Webster House more historic details about his office, his desk, etc.

Vision::Redesign

The second vision, Vision::Redesign, has an intent to improve the current online accessibility to the 1828 dictionary. The current database, http://1828.mshaffer.com/, has mistakes, omissions of etymology, etc. For this reason the most important tasks, Task::XML, will be an online editing of the current words and definitions to include important missing information. An administrative tool has been built to make this possible [http://1828d.mshaffer.com/] and will be accessible to the community to help in the editing process once the microfilm scan occurs.

Access to American Heritage

The moral fiber of our country is the fortress of our future success. The Foundation for American Heritage Access has a simple goal: make historic manuscripts that influenced the American culture available and accessible to modern America. A stronger America comes through the education of our children; through the preservation of the fabric of society that has defined this country; through the culture distilled upon us through our history. We should honor and respect the Christian foundations of this country; our hearts should turn to our historic parentage (Malachi 4).
